Gary L. Starkey, M.D., FAPA
Medical Director
Dr. Starkey has specialized in medication management over the past 40 years in the practice of Psychiatry.
Life experiences include service as a Naval Officer, prison psychiatrist, facility medical director and researcher.
He has taught both medical students and residents at Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Eastern Virginia Medical School, The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Starkey is a Board-Certified psychiatrist and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
When not working, Dr. Starkey enjoys spending time with his large family and following Ohio State football.
Dr. Federico Vizcaino, M.D., LFAPA
Dr. Vizcaino is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 40 years experience. He is also a lifetime fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is affiliated with Churchland Psychiatric Associates and is also an admitting physician at Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. He received his medical degree from Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala City and graduated with honors from University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1978.
During Dr. Vizcaino's second year residency, he was chosen from all residents across the United States to be part of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, a group of 21 residents who served for 2 years. He was a fellow in the Therapy Community and did research. This was a great honor for him.
Some of Dr. Vizcaino's interests include cars and planes.
THERAPISTS
Bev Bullock, LCSW
Beverly (Bev) Bullock has a master’s degree in Social Work and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She provides individual, family and group therapy for children and adolescents, as well as adults. Although she works with most mental health disorders, she especially enjoys doing social skills groups with children who have behavioral problems or are in the autistic spectrum. Bev has a real passion for working with people and helping them deal with difficult situations in their lives. In addition to clinical work, she has developed curriculum and training courses for day care providers and those who work with at-risk families. She has also taught in the Human Services and Public Administration Departments as an adjunct professor for local community colleges.
In her spare time, Bev likes to laugh and have fun. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going to the Outer Banks of NC, doing stained glass, and gardening. Recently, she has learned how to make pickles, salsa, and tomato sauce from her garden successes.
Richard Jaglowski, LCSW
Rich, a New Jersey native, received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Villanova University and his graduate degree in Clinical Social Work from New York University. In the Tidewater area for over 40 years, he has now been associated with CPA for over 20 years.
Rich has been a Clinical Coordinator of an inpatient psychiatric program for over 30 years and now splits his time between CPA and Norfolk Collegiate School where he is their Clinical Coordinator.
At CPA, Rich works with adults, couples and teens utilizing a combination of individual, family and couples therapy. He enjoys working with athletes whose anxiety or lack of focus hinders their development. Growing up, Rich’s father owned a sporting good store. Rich enjoys running, playing golf and many other sports.
Mary “Jackie” Lankford, LCSW
Jackie Lankford, LCSW works with ages 3 to 103 with anxiety, depression, grief, PTSD, trauma, ADHD, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, gender identity, SPED laws, and school issues, as well as case management. Jackie has had a great love of service for others throughout her entire life and career which serves to fuel her quest for knowledge.
She earned her associate's degree in human services from the University of Kentucky, her bachelor's degree in science with an emphasis in social work from Western Kentucky University, as well as her master's degree in social work from the University of Southern Indiana.
In her free time, she loves being with her family and kids, hanging out with friends, camping, exercising, reading the Bible, watching old movies, and anything to do with Andy Griffith.
Karen McKinley, Psy.D, LCSW

Dr. Karen McKinley PsyD, LCSW has been a clinician at Churchland Psychiatric Associates for 33years. Previously she was a Clinician and Hospital Administrator with First Hospital Corporation in Puerto Rico, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Dr McKinley also conducted psychosocial research and clinical psychosocial interventions with patients and their families in the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorder Program at Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters.
Dr McKinley received her BA in Social Work from the University of Iowa. She received her MSW in Clinical Social Work from West Virginia University and her MHA in Health Care Administration and Marketing from Wilkes University. She was awarded her PsyD in Clinical Psychology from California Southern University.
Dr McKinley currently works with adolescents and adults and specializes in stress, trauma, loss and coexisting medical issues. She provides individual Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy and Neuro Emotional Technique.
When not at work she enjoys her family, travel, weaving, knitting and quilting.
Geoffrey Ludford, EdD, LPC
Dr. Ludford is a certified psychotherapist with over 30 years of experience in mental health care. He received his degree in Professional Counseling from The College of William & Mary in 1994. Before joining Churchland Psychiatric Associates in 2012, Dr. Ludford was a partner for 6 years with Dominion Psychiatric Associates.
Dr. Ludford enjoys working with individuals as well as couples and families. In addition to his skills in the areas of problem resolution and patient focused care, he is also proficient in CBT, substance abuse and sex offender treatment.
In his spare time, Dr. Ludford enjoys traveling. His latest adventures have taken him to Scotland, Australia and New Zealand.
Ken Labasky, LCSW, MAC
Ken is a Vietnam Era Veteran. He graduated Old Dominion University with his Bachelor in Psychology and furthered his education at Norfolk State University with his Master in Social Work. He has 40+ years of clinical experience including both inpatient and outpatient services working with all patient demographics.
Ken’s philosophy is the Big “3”..Faith, Family & Freedom to help you stay strong daily and manage those “unguarded moments” in life…………Learn to think outside the “BOX”.
When not working, Ken enjoys spending time with family, grandkids, watching sports, coaching and listening to music.
Gregory Griffin, LCSW
Greg has a 40 year history of working in the community as a Pediatric Oncology Social Worker at CHKD, as the clinical director of The Barry Robinson Center, the director of Hampton Roads Psychological Associates and currently as an outpatient therapist at Churchland Psychiatric Associates. In addition he has volunteered with the Suicide Hotline, as a Military Family Counselor and Adjunct Faculty at CNU.
Greg graduated from Old Dominion University in 1976 with his Bachelor's of Psychology and from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1981 with his Master's in Social Work.
In Greg’s free time, he has thoroughly enjoyed coaching youth sports. He credits his experience at Virginia Martial Arts Center with helping forge his character. While he of these activities are important to him, they pale in comparison to the joy provided by his own family.
He still feels it is a privilege to join others on their path to find resolution and meaning. Greg sees patients from ages 10 to 100.
Ashley Dyer, LPC
Ashley Dyer is a licensed professional counselor with experience in individual counseling and family counseling. She completed her residency at Rawles Psychological Services, and before that completed her practicum and internship at Christian Psychotherapy Services. She received her Master of Arts in Counseling from Liberty University in 2019. She received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Virginia Tech in 2005.
Ashley enjoys working with adults on the autism spectrum/intellectual disability, adult women who have experienced abuse and/or reproductive issues, and military personnel who have experienced trauma. She has experience providing individual therapy and administering psychological evaluations to children ages 7+, adolescents, and adults with a variety of mental health concerns such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, dissociative disorder, and complex trauma/PTSD.
Prior to earning her master’s degree, Ashley worked in the social work field with homeless and at-risk populations within the non-profit sector. She also has over 10 years of experience working in a school setting in an administrative capacity. Her previous experience has fueled her passion for helping others by meeting people where they are. Ashley is also an avid reader, loves gardening and working in the yard, traveling, and spending time with her 3-year-old son and husband.
Jeanne Burger, EDD, LPC, LMFT, TEP
Dr. Burger is licensed as a professional counselor, a marriage and family therapist and a retired registered nurse.
In practice for more than 30 years, she specializes in issues of relationships, anxiety, depression as well as issues of personal growth including grief, career problems and self-esteem.
Dr. Burger presents nationally and internationally on the experiential modality of psychodrama. This is a relational theory that invites interactions to explore the effect that our past experience has on our present relationships and choices. She also works at Onsite in Tennessee as a therapist for trauma- informed intensive workshops.
Sal Settineri, LPC
Sal Settineri is a licensed professional counselor at Churchland Psychiatric Associates. He is originally from New York and studied at Stony Brook University where he remains an active member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Iota Delta Chapter fraternity. He witnessed the 9/11 attacks in person, which had a profound impact on his Naval career, where he served as a flight instructor until 2018. He later pursued higher education in the Clinical Counseling field to continue to serve his community. He completed his graduate studies at the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at South University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, a CACREP accredited program.
Sal has extensive volunteer service with the CASA program for those in foster care, Contact Community Service Suicide Prevention hotline, the Bon Secours Hospice team, the Adult Literacy Volunteers of America, the Stephen Ministry program, and the Wounded Warriors Program. Sal is passionate about equipping individuals with the tools they need to overcome personal and professional obstacles. He is enthusiastic about Executive Leadership Counseling, and is very skilled with serving those in leadership roles.
He is experienced and adept in working with Military and Veteran clients, those service members that are transitioning to civilian life, utilizing the Veterans Administration disability and healthcare systems, and he is highly skilled at assisting clients through the military healthcare system. Sal loves to empower individuals to live their best lives to their fullest potential, and it shows!
In his spare time Sal works on wood-working projects, yard work, spending the day at the beach, and working out.
Zack Todaro, LPC
Zackary (Zack) Todaro is a licensed professional counselor qualified to work with a diverse population in Virginia. Zack graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree with a focus in Psychology from Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia. He returned to ODU to achieve a CACREP-accredited Master of Science in Education degree with a focus on Mental Health Counseling. He is also a Nationally Certified Counselor and received training on trauma-based therapy, crisis interventions, and person-centered approaches.
Zack was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he continues to reside today with his loving wife and energetic dog! Zack enjoys spending his off time with his family, hiking, reading, and trying new board games. He expresses enjoyment in bringing humor and light-heartedness into sessions when appropriate and giving clients the space to be themselves.
Through sessions he strives to individualize the service for each of his clients to meet their needs and believes the unique qualities of everyone he serves is something to appreciate. Zack is motivated about helping others reach their goals in therapy and working to better serve those he works with.
Zack is a considerate, punctual, empathetic, hardworking, and patient individual that desires to help as many people as he can through his work. Zack completed his internship for his master’s degree in the emergency room of CHKD and inpatient at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, where he worked alongside hospital staff with children and adults to meet their immediate needs. He has also worked in the community through Intensive in-home counseling assisting at-risk youth, adults, and their families. Zack is well versed working with all age populations but, has an overarching experience with children and adolescents from 6-17. As Zack has become more active in outpatient therapy settings, he has worked with populations from 6-80 years of age.

Richardean Benjamin, RN, PMHNP-BC, PhD
Richardean Benjamin is a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). She has been a practicing nurse for over 50 years most of which as a faculty member. She completed BSN from Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA.; MSN from Medical College of Georgia; PhD from the University of Texas at Austin; Postdoctoral Fellow and MPH in psychiatric epidemiology from University of Pittsburgh; Nurse practitioner postmasters certificate from University of Virginia. Dr. Benjamin provides medication management for adult patients with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and ADHD.
Dr. Benjamin enjoys singing, traveling and working out at the gym.
Mona Patel, PMHNP-BC
Mona Patel graduated with her Bachelor of Nursing from Hampton University in 2014 and graduated with her Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in Psychiatry from Hampton University in 2022. Mona has worked in inpatient mental health for five years and worked in Dialysis for three years as a nurse. Mona treats an array of mental health issues including Depression, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, PTSD, Anxiety disorders, and Autism. Mona works with clients ranging from 5 to 80 years of age. She strives to provide a safe, inclusive, and comfortable space for all her patients.
In her free time Mona enjoys traveling, cooking, and spending time with her family.
Marla Clancy, PMHNP-BC
Marla Clancy, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC works with children and adolescents with anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, and autism. She earned her bachelors in nursing in 1992, and due to her love of children and teens went back to school and earned her master’s in nursing and subsequently becoming board-certified as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in 2020. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family & pets, playing in the dirt, being artsy crafty, and researching travel destinations.
Paula Crew, PMHNP-BC
Paula is a psychiatric nurse practitioner who works with patients from all walks of life. She diagnoses and provides medication management and therapy treatment for patients with depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and substance abuse disorders.
Paula is a provider who’s passionate about helping patients to achieve their goals through a therapeutic relationship that emphasizes listening, collaboration, empathy, and trust. She believes in utilizing a holistic approach when treating patients, thereby treating the whole person so that healing can occur.
Paula earned a Diploma in Nursing at Riverside School of Professional Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Grand Canyon University, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University. She is certified by the board of Nursing & Medicine as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She is also trained in Eye Movement and Desensitizing and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).
Paula’s history includes 8 years of experience providing psychiatric nursing care in three of the area’s major psychiatric hospitals and her experience also includes hospice care, medical surgical care of patients and nurse education.
Sophia Zwirner, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC
Sophia treats a variety of mental health disorders in adolescents and adults 17 years and older, like Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and ADHD. She has 5 years of experience in psychiatric care, and has also worked in Dialysis, ICU, and Medical-Surgical nursing.
Sophia received her RN through Riverside College of Health Careers, then her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University, and finally her Masters of Science in Nursing from Walden University with a specialized certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
In her free time, she enjoys reading, crocheting, traveling, and spending time with her family and fur babies.
Tonya Alexander, PA-CAQ Psychiatry
Tonya served 23 years in the United States Navy as an Independent Duty Corpsman. During that time, she witnessed firsthand the effects of trauma on her comrades and realized the pressing need for compassionate mental health care. This inspired her to earn her Master's in Health Sciences from Trident University and Master's in Physician Assistant with a CAQ (Certificate of Added Qualifications) in Psychiatry from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). Tonya's unique experiences and perspective empower her patients to navigate the challenges of mental health with resilience and strength.
Outside of her work at Churchland Psychiatric Associates, Tonya finds peace in the company of animals. She recognizes the therapeutic bond between animals and humans, and brings her dog, Bosco, into the office on special occasions. Bosco's visits exemplify the healing power of animals, and foster an environment of compassion and support for those seeking mental health care.

Amber is a compassionate mental health professional who is excited to help those who are eager for positive change.
She graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor in Health Sciences. She also received a Master in Social Work from Walden University.
In her free time, Amber enjoys gardening, exercising and being creative. Her goal is to enable motivated clients to increase their quality of life.
Abbie Todaro, Supervisee in Clinical Social Work, MSW
Abbie is a Supervisee in Social Work. She graduated from George Mason University with her Master's in Social Work. She is excited to support and work with children and young adults who are looking for holistic and positive encouragement and change.
Outside of work, Abbie enjoys playing with her dog, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

Meet Bosco, our beloved therapy dog with a heart of gold. Bosco's journey began four years ago when he was rescued from a shelter. Since then, he has transformed the lives of everyone he meets. Bosco has an innate sense of what each patient needs—whether it's a comforting nuzzle, a reassuring gaze, or simply being there to listen, he offers a special kind of support that only a furry friend like him can provide. Bosco's soothing presence has played an integral role in the recovery of numerous patients and we are grateful to have him as a cherished member of our team.
